Root Canal Treatment: Preserving the Internal Structure of the Tooth and Restoring its Health

Root canal treatment is the treatment of situations where the pulp, which is the living tissue on the inside of the tooth, becomes infected as a result of conditions such as tooth decay, trauma or tooth breakage. This infection occurs when bacteria from the tissues around the tooth affect the living tissue inside the tooth.

The pulp tissue located under the enamel and dentin tissues of the tooth provides nutrition to the tooth and controls its sensation. If this tissue becomes infected, severe pain and sensitivity may occur in the tooth. Root canal treatment is applied to relieve this pain and preserve the health of the tooth.

Root canal treatment is usually performed under local anesthesia. First of all, tooth decay, if any, is cleaned and the inside of the tooth is accessed. Then, the infected tissues in the canal are cleaned with special tools and the root canals are shaped and filled. This process is usually completed in 2-3 sessions.

Root canal treatment is the last treatment option that can be applied to the tooth and is important to protect the internal structure of the tooth. During the treatment, the tooth can be filled, or depending on the condition of the tooth, applications such as crowns or insertion of piva into the canal can be performed.

Root canal treatment is generally not perceived as a painful procedure. The tenderness felt is usually due to existing infection and inflammation. There may be mild tenderness for a few days following treatment, but this pain can usually be controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers.

When performed in accordance with the treatment rules, root canal treatment is successful and the health of the tooth is preserved. In rare cases, in case of unsuccessful application, root canal treatment can be repeated.
